Longview 2030

What is Longview 2030?

Longview is a long-term outlook for global dairy markets and trade to 2030, produced as part of our Global Dairy Directions platform.

Longview provides a framework of analysis that identifies, analyses and quantifies the big levers of change that will shape the global dairy value chain from farm to consumer. It develops a “most likely” future scenario.

We have prepared an initial report summarising the approach, the findings and the outlook scenario. We will update this annually and provide a regular newsletter monitoring the issues including – emerging influences – covered in the work.

Subscribers can elect to purchase a report or have the option of also downloading a desktop version of the analysis model used to prepare the analysis. This tool allows the user to vary key assumptions, build their own scenarios and assess the materiality of the large number of assumptions used in the outlook projections.

Why use Longview 2030?

There is so much focus on here-and-now dairy market dynamics – explaining or resolving what just happened, and complexities affecting the short-term outlook for prices.

With this focus increasing as market influences become more complex, it is easy to forget the major shifts that will affect the sector in the long term.

The Longview analysis aims to help understand the impact of steadily developing changes, building medium to long term scenarios.

It is designed to be used for:

  • long-term strategy development, guiding priorities on product portfolios, markets and capacity investments;
  • industry or government policy development relevant to trade, innovation and capability development as well as improving awareness of potential future scenarios;
  • further analysis and evaluation of specific factors and further extension into issues that may be relevant to specific users.

The Longview DTS?

The Longview DTS is an extension of our short-term market outlook model. It projects the global net trade balance over the period to 2030, translating that into expected market tension and commodity milk value.

The purpose in providing it as a part of this product recognises that there are likely to be a range of views and opinions about how the future will be shaped. The tool allows users to vary assumptions and build their own view of the future.

Specifically the tool allows a user to run their own “what-if” analyses and/or build their own composite scenarios of the medium to long-term by:

  • Varying milk production growth in major exporters – including adjusting livestock numbers and/or yields
  • Varying major demand assumptions – domestic demand in major producing exporters or in importing regions
  • Vary fat and protein in milk supply in major exporters
  • Vary commodity product mix

Users could select specific assumption changes to include in their composite scenario and could also run a “Monte Carlo” analysis on milk supply volatility subject to weather.
